Full-time & Part-time Students

  • Full-time: Standard number of working/study units
  • Part-time: it usually concerns the credit load If university X students have to take 120 credits a year for 3-year course, the total credits will be 360. If these students are taking part-time, they might have been doing 60 credits per year for 6 years
  • What if the university does not operate a credit or module system? Assuming the whole degree program equates 1 credit. If the program typically takes 3 years to complete on a full time basis, the credit load should be 1/3. Part-time students will have a lower credit load as they are taking longer to complete the program-perhaps it would be 1/5 or 1/6

Full-Time Equivalent (FTE)

  • FTE is the total number of Full-Time personnel it would take to meet the commitments currently met by both Full-time and Part-time personnel. Mathematically, FTE=Full-time + 1/3 Part-time figures
  • Headcount figure = Full-time + Part-time
  • If there are no Part-time personnel, then the headcount is equal to FTE figure.
